Description

Larger, flashier, and sometimes paler than other grayish Tricholoma species, the tiger tricholoma is a poisonous mushroom and anyone who'd like to try Tricholoma mushrooms should know of this species and its toxicity. The species is relatively rare and it occurs once in several years.

The tiger tricholoma occurs in a number of natural habitats, mostly disturbed ones - footpaths, forest trails, and roadsides. It prefers wet environments. This fungus forms a symbiotic relationship with trees where it exchanges mineral nutrients for photosynthates from its host. It is always found near the roots of the tree.

Toxicity

The tiger tricholoma is considered a highly poisonous species. It causes severe gastrointestinal problems including violent vomiting, diarrhea, nausea, stomach cramps, and profuse sweating. These symptoms can be so severe that they require hospitalization. In some cases, the poisoning can lead to persistent gastroenteritis.
